Introduction / History

The Makwe have 50% linguistic similarities with Swahili, Mwani and Yao but different enough to disserve its own translation. Swahili is understood by most men, but amongst women there is little understanding of this trade language. In the Palma district all men can speak Makonde. Those who attended school can speak and read in Portuguese or Swahili.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Their subsistence activities are agriculture, trading and fishing. There is great interaction between men, especially because of trade.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Makwe are Muslims or animists. Even those who are Muslims are highly syncretistic. Even though they have Islam as their formal religion, in their daily lives when facing problems, they go to traditional healers. There is high resistance to other religions.

What Are Their Needs?

There is a small chance for them to know the gospel through the Makonde or Swahili. There is little willingness from nationals to reach out to the Muslim groups. Their needs are in the areas of health, education/sports and social development.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to show the Makwe people his glory in such a way they will flock to him.
Pray for loving and committed workers to go to them until there are Makwe disciples who make more disciples.
Pray for their elders to have dreams and visions of the risen Christ.
