Introduction / History

The Korowai people live in the dense rainforests of Papua, Indonesia's easternmost province, located on the western half of the island of New Guinea. They are located between the Upper reaches of the Eilanden and Becking river systems, in the north extending east to the Casuary River which drains in the Digul.

They are famous for living in treehouses (Rumah Tinggi) 35 to 50 meters above the ground that protect them from rival clans, floods, and insects. They are also known for invoking cannibalism as a form of punishment and retaliation for crimes. The Korowai had little if any interaction with the modern world until Dutch missionaries arrived.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Korowai culture, like that of many primitive tribes, has been undergoing a painful evolution as they increasingly encounter the modern world. Most continue to live from the land, harvesting sago (a starch extracted from trees), hunting, fishing, and gathering. They have domesticated pigs. Their lives revolve around finding food and money and organizing sago grub feasts. Regularly there are sago grub feasts that bring the people together. Each day, they follow strict rules to avoid committing taboo acts (such as cutting down a tree in the forbidden part of the forest) and dutifully pause from their work when the shaman arrives to perform a healing ritual on someone who is ill. Some Korowai are involved in the tourist industry, dancing and engaging in traditional ceremonies for visitors.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Korowai are animists. They believe spirits inhabit nature and that evil spirits (khakhua) seek to harm them. They engage in rituals and pig sacrifices to appease these spirits and practice magic. They also believe in ancestral ghosts. They strongly believe that every bad thing that happens is caused by spirits, witchcraft and magic and needs to be countered with anti-magic.

What Are Their Needs?

Korowais need a clear and compassionate presentation of the gospel in their own language. They would also benefit from economic development, access to healthcare, and educational opportunities.
