They belong to the island communities of the D'Entrecasteaux area, where life has long been shaped by coastal settlement, seafaring, gardening, and close village ties. Their language is Koluwawa, an Austronesian language of this island region.
The Kalokalo live in an island setting where daily life is closely connected to the sea, coastal land, and village relationships. On Fergusson Island and nearby islands, communities commonly depend on small-scale gardening, fishing, coconut and root-crop production, and movement by canoe or small boat between coastal settlements. Houses are typically simple village homes built from local materials suited to a humid tropical environment. Family and clan relationships are central, and village life is often organized around shared labor, kinship obligations, and church or community gatherings. Their language in ordinary life is Koluwawa.
The Kalokalo are identified primarily as Christian, with some continuing ethnic religious influence. Scripture is available in their language.
The Kalokalo need spiritual depth, biblical clarity, and genuine discipleship so that Christian identity is matched by real faith and obedience to Christ. Where a people group has a strong Christian base, the great need is not merely identification with Christianity but renewal, maturity, and faithfulness. They need strong local believers, sound teaching, healthy churches, and faithful leaders who will stand on Scripture and resist compromise with older spiritual patterns. They also need a burden to carry the gospel beyond their own community and to bear witness to other ethnic groups around them.
Pray that the Kalokalo who identify as Christian would grow in biblical conviction, repentance, and joyful obedience to Christ.
Pray that the Lord would strengthen pastors, elders, and other local leaders to teach Scripture faithfully and lead with courage.
Pray that any remaining attachment to older spiritual practices would be fully surrendered to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Pray for healthy churches, strong families, and enduring discipleship among the Kalokalo.
Pray that the Kalokalo would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a blessing beyond their own people.
