The Western Dani, also known as Lani, live in the central highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia, west of the Baliem Grand Valley. They are part of the larger Dani cultural group but have their own distinct language and traditions. The Western Dani speak the Western Dani language, which belongs to the Trans–New Guinea family and is one of the most widely spoken Papuan languages. Historically, the Western Dani lived in isolation until the mid-20th century, when explorers and missionaries first made contact. Before that, their society was organized around subsistence farming, clan alliances, and traditional ceremonies. Today, while modern influences have reached their region, many Western Dani still maintain traditional customs alongside newer practices.
Western Dani communities are built around family and farming. Sweet potatoes are the main crop, supplemented by taro, bananas, and vegetables. Pigs are highly valued and play a central role in trade and ceremonial life. Villages are organized into small hamlets with men's and women's huts called honai, built with thick thatched roofs to keep warm during cold nights in the highlands. Families are close-knit, and cooperation within the community is essential for survival.
Celebrations often feature pig feasts, which mark weddings, funerals, and alliances between clans. Traditional cooking uses earth ovens: hot stones are layered with meat and vegetables wrapped in leaves, then covered to steam for hours. Music and dance are important cultural expressions, often performed during festivals and special occasions. While younger generations increasingly wear modern clothing, traditional dress and ornaments are still used for ceremonies.
The Western Dani identify largely with Christianity, but traditional animistic practices remain strong in many areas. Older customs include rituals to honor ancestral spirits and ceremonies seeking protection or fertility. While churches exist and many profess faith in Christ, there is still a need for deeper understanding of the gospel and for spiritual renewal. There is also a need for them to take true Christianity to those who rely on the spirit world.
The Western Dani face both physical and spiritual challenges. Access to healthcare and education is limited, and many families live in poverty. Isolation makes it difficult to receive modern services, and infrastructure is minimal.
