Introduction / History

Arab geographers mentioned the Khalaj speaking people in the 9th and 10th centuries; they were listed among Turkic people of the Central Asian steppes. In Iran today they speak the Khalaj language, which is also spoken in neighboring Azerbaijan. This people group is defined by their language.

Where Are they Located?

The people who speak Turkic Khalaj live northeast of the city of Arak in central Iran.

What Are Their Lives Like?

We know very little about the lives of the people who speak Turkic Khalaj. They are defined by their language, not their customs.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Turkic Khalaj speakers are close to 100 percent Shi'ite Muslim.

What Are Their Needs?

There are no known evangelical Christians or churches. There is no access to evangelical print, audio, or human resources. There is a spiritual battle in progress. It will take a miracle of God to guide them to the ways of Jesus Christ, but we know that our God is a God of miracles.

Prayer Points

* Pray that there will soon be accurately translated Christian materials in their language.
* Ask the Lord to equip prayer warriors to overcome spiritual darkness in Iran so that the gospel will soon be made known among the Khalaj people.
* Pray that many Turkic Khalaj speakers will be set free to know, love, and glorify God.
* Pray that the Khalaj people will receive Christ and they will become a blessed people, shining with the light of Jesus in a dark world.
