Introduction / History

The Dambi people live in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea, particularly in the inland Mumeng District. Their communities are situated in a region shaped by mountains, rivers, and dense vegetation, which has contributed to their relative isolation and the preservation of their distinct identity.

Their language, known as Dambi, is part of the Austronesian language family and is closely tied to their cultural heritage. Over time, geographic separation from neighboring groups has helped maintain their uniqueness, even as trade and limited contact have connected them to the wider region.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Dambi live in small, rural settlements where daily life revolves around subsistence farming and close family relationships. Gardens are central to survival, providing staple foods such as root crops and other locally grown produce. The surrounding forests and rivers offer additional resources for building materials, food, and basic tools.

Homes are typically constructed from natural materials gathered nearby, reflecting a lifestyle closely tied to the land. Movement between villages can be difficult due to the terrain, and many communities remain accessible only by footpaths.

Their language is used within the community, while broader communication with outsiders may involve regional trade languages such as Tok Pisin. Cultural knowledge is passed down through oral tradition, with stories, customs, and practical skills shared across generations.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Dambi are largely identified with Christianity, though traditional beliefs in spiritual forces may still influence aspects of daily life. These older beliefs often relate to the natural world and the unseen spiritual realm, shaping how people understand illness, misfortune, and community harmony.

Christian teaching has brought significant influence, but in some cases it exists alongside earlier practices rather than fully replacing them. This can result in a mixture of beliefs that affects how faith is understood and lived out.

There are no known portions of Scripture available in their language. This creates a serious barrier to deeper understanding, as access to God's Word is limited to other languages that may not be fully understood by all.

What Are Their Needs?

The Dambi face challenges common to remote inland communities. Access to healthcare, education, and transportation is often limited due to difficult terrain and lack of infrastructure. Daily life requires significant physical effort, and outside services may be far away or difficult to reach.

Spiritually, the greatest need is for clear access to Scripture in their language. Without it, growth in biblical understanding is hindered, and teaching must rely on secondary languages or outside help.

There is also a need for faithful local leaders who can teach God's Word accurately and guide believers toward spiritual maturity. Strengthening the local church will be essential for long-term growth and stability.

Prayer Items
