Introduction / History

The Dutch speak Dutch, a Germanic language which defines them as a people. They are from the Netherlands, made up of 12 provinces, two of which carry the name Holland.

The Dutch urbanized sooner than other ethnic groups in Europe. Though the Netherlands is small in land mass, it has a long history as a maritime and colonial power. The Dutch had important colonial holdings in Indonesia, South Africa, Suriname, and Aruba, thus influencing three continents.

For many reasons, the Dutch have settled in 30 countries, including Austria. The 1700s were a time of much strife between the Dutch and the Austrians.

What Are Their Lives Like?

For hundreds of years, the Dutch have preferred an urban lifestyle. In other European countries like Austria they are usually there either for educational or business purposes.
