Introduction / History

The Fleming are a Germanic people group who speak Western Flemish, a Dutch dialect. They are the largest people group in Belgium, a country that came into being in the first half of the nineteenth century when they broke away from the Netherlands. The Flemish language and people are native to Flanders in northern Belgium. The Flemish live in many other countries as well as Belgium. Most of these countries are in Western Europe, but there are exceptions. One key exception is Rwanda, East Africa. This small country was once a colony of the Germans and the Belgians. During that time, a small number of Flemish settled in that East African country.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Married couples among the Flemish often have small businesses. The number of divorces has increased. The Flemish tend to want to get to know someone on a personal basis before entering into a business agreement. For example, they might ask about a client about their family life. The Flemish have a strong work ethic, and they consider it a matter of honor to work hard.

The Flemish enjoy fish and shellfish. They also enjoy a flavorful beef stew called Carbonade flamande or stoofvlees.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Fleming are usually Roman Catholics, but few attend mass regularly. Many have given up on spiritual matters and consider themselves agnostics or atheists.

What Are Their Needs?

The Flemish people need to put Christ first in their lives.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to revive the Flemish church, leading them to make disciples who will make more disciples.

Pray that the Flemish will find secularism empty and destructive, clearing the path for spiritual refreshment.

Pray for spiritual hunger and a discernment that will keep them away from spiritual counterfeits.

Pray for the Lord to raise up Flemish Christ followers who will take the name of Christ to the nations.
