Introduction / History

The Akan-Akyem are one of the major Akan-speaking peoples of southern Ghana. They are traditionally associated with the Akyem states in Ghana's Eastern Region, including Akyem Abuakwa, Akyem Kotoku, and Akyem Bosome. The Akyem share a common heritage with other Akan peoples, including the Asante, Akuapem, Bono, and Fante, while maintaining their own distinct identity and traditional leadership.

Akan society has a long history of organized kingdoms, extensive trade, and strong systems of customary law. The Akyem have historically been known for their resilience, military strength, and participation in the political development of Ghana. They have a mutual identity and consider themselves to be one Akan nation.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Akan-Akyem live in both rural communities and growing urban centers. Agriculture remains an important occupation, with many families cultivating cocoa, plantains, cassava, maize, cocoyams, and other food crops. Others work in business, education, government, mining, and a wide variety of professions. Improved transportation and education have enabled many Akyem to move between villages and cities while maintaining close ties with their extended families.

Family life is central to Akyem culture. Like other Akan peoples, they traditionally follow a matrilineal system in which clan membership and inheritance are traced through the mother's family. Respect for elders, chiefs, and family obligations remains an important part of community life. Storytelling, proverbs, music, dance, festivals, and colorful traditional clothing continue to preserve Akyem cultural identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Akan-Akyem today identify as Christians, and churches play a significant role in community life. Christianity has been established among the Akyem for many generations, and many churches are led by local pastors and Christian leaders.

Traditional Akan beliefs, however, continue to influence some aspects of culture. Historically, the Akan believed in a supreme Creator, often called Nyame or Onyankopon, while also recognizing ancestral spirits and spiritual beings associated with the natural world. In some communities, traditional ceremonies, libation, or consultation with traditional spiritual practitioners may continue alongside Christian practice. Continued biblical teaching and discipleship help believers develop a faith that is firmly grounded in Scripture.

What Are Their Needs?

The Akan-Akyem have benefited from widespread access to churches, schools, and portions of Scripture in their own language. Even so, there is an ongoing need for biblical discipleship, leadership development, and strong, Christ-centered families. Churches continue to benefit from well-trained leaders who can faithfully teach God's Word and equip believers to share their faith.

Many communities also seek continued improvements in education, employment opportunities, healthcare, and ethical leadership. As Ghana continues to develop economically, Christians have opportunities to demonstrate biblical integrity, compassion, and servant leadership in every area of society.

Prayer Items

Pray that Akan-Akyem believers will continue to grow in their knowledge and obedience to God's word. Pray that churches will disciple new believers and equip them for effective ministry.
