Introduction / History

The various Totonaca tribes live in Veracruz, Puebla, and Hidalgo states of Mexico. Their ancestors had a high culture. One of their subgroups is the Yecuatla Totonaca.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Yecuatla Totonaca live like most indigenous peoples of Mexico. They plant and harvest corn, beans, squash, and chilis. Others have adopted Mexican cultural and social practices.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though they are Roman Catholic, the Yecuatla Totonaca retain some ancient religious traditions. For example, before planting corn they mix the seeds with soil and the blood of a sacrificed chicken.

What Are Their Needs?

The Yecuatla Totonaca need to put all their faith in Jesus Christ, not in any religious institution.
