Introduction / History

Wampur speakers live in Wampul and Mirir villages along the Wanton River in Morobe Province, near the Eastern Highlands border. A few people live to the south in the Waffa-speaking village of Aringon.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Wampur speakers are trilingual. The Wampur language is preferred for face-to-face communication by all generations in most domains of village life, but they can also speak Tok Pisin and Adzera. Adzera is the language of the neighboring tribe. Sadly the Wampur literacy rate is only 43 per cent for men and just 15 per cent for women. Similarly, the adult literacy in Tok Pisin is only 30 per cent.

What Are Their Beliefs?

These are Christians who need access to a complete Bible, and the ability to read it.

What Are Their Needs?

The people are very isolated and with few services. It is a long walk to the Highlands Highway that connects their district to Lae, the capital city of Morobe Province. Pray for their wellbeing.

Prayer Points

Pray for education opportunities and for access to audio scriptures.
The Global Recordings Network has recorded some online Bible teaching in Wampur.
Pray that some might be able to get internet access to this recording.
Ask God for workers to bring his word to the Wampur people, and that the Wampur speakers will desire to have God's word. Perhaps a translation could be adapted in part from the existing Adzera New Testament?
