Introduction / History

The Waja people live on mountains and plains near the Gongola River Basin. They are mostly farmers producing peanuts, cotton, sorghum, millet, cowpeas, cassava, beans, onions and tobacco. Some keep cattle, goats, sheep, horses and donkeys. Others are skilled weavers and dyers of cotton cloth. The discovery of limestone deposits led to building a cement factory nearby creating another income source for them.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The traditional African Religion has become less dominant in recent years. When the "Jesus" film was shown to the Waja people they were shocked to hear their language coming from the screen! The film gave the Waja speakers a taste of Scripture in their mother tongue. Now they are eager for the rest of the Bible.

Believers are using the Gospel of Luke and other Scripture portions they now have in their language to share the message. They are determined to make more of God's Word available. This will be used not only in the churches for services, but to address social issues like materialism, substance abuse and health concerns like HIV/AIDs.
