Introduction / History

The Seri in Mexico are an Indigenous people of coastal Sonora, especially centered in the communities of Punta Chueca and El Desemboque along the Gulf of California. They call themselves Comcaac and belong to a distinct cultural and linguistic tradition unlike neighboring Indigenous groups in the region. Their history is deeply tied to the desert-and-sea environment of northwestern Sonora, where they long resisted outside domination and maintained a strong identity despite Spanish and later Mexican pressure.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Seri commonly live in the coastal communities of Punta Chueca and El Desemboque, with life closely tied to both the sea and the desert. Ordinary life has long centered on fishing, gathering marine resources, small-scale trade, and artisan work, with movement shaped by fishing cycles and access along the coast. Community life remains strongly family- and kinship-based, and traditional patterns of sharing food and resources have been especially important in their social life. In the villages, many homes are now built with modern materials, though traditional shelters are still used in some fishing areas and during festivals. Roads connect Punta Chueca south toward Bahía de Kino and El Desemboque north toward Puerto Libertad, but the setting remains relatively isolated. Their language, Seri, is still actively used in daily life and remains one of the strongest markers of their distinct identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Seri are primarily Christian in outward profession. Even so, outward Christian identity does not automatically mean deep biblical understanding, spiritual maturity, or genuine conversion. In a community with a distinct history and strong traditional identity, there can still be a need for faithful discipleship, sound doctrine, and churches marked by genuine repentance and obedience. Scripture is available in their language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Seri need more than outward religious identity. They need clear gospel witness that leads to genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, and they need believers who are deeply rooted in biblical truth rather than shaped mainly by tradition or nominal profession. They need faithful pastors, elders, and teachers who can handle Scripture soundly and strengthen local churches with clarity and perseverance. Strong Christian families, serious discipleship, and enduring congregations are needed so that the next generation is formed by God's Word. Because of their relative isolation and strong cultural cohesion, they also need an enduring Christian witness that is both biblically faithful and spiritually resilient.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Seri would hear the gospel clearly and respond with genuine repentance and faith in Christ.
Pray that outward Christian profession among the Seri would be matched by deep biblical conviction and transformed lives.
Pray that the Lord would raise up faithful pastors, elders, and teachers among them who handle Scripture rightly.
Pray for strong Christian families and for the next generation to be discipled in truth.
Pray that churches among the Seri would remain spiritually healthy, biblically grounded, and enduring.
