This people group lives on Takuu Atoll, also called the Mortlock Islands, a remote Polynesian outlier northeast of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. They are distinct from the better-known Mortlock Islands in Micronesia. The Takuu Mortlock Islander belong to a small atoll society whose history has been shaped by long isolation, strong kinship networks, seafaring traditions, and a Polynesian cultural identity maintained within the broader Melanesian setting of Papua New Guinea. Their language is Takuu, also called Mortlock, a Polynesian language spoken on Takuu Atoll and among community members living elsewhere in Papua New Guinea.
The Takuu Mortlock Islander live in a very small coral-atoll environment where daily life is closely tied to the sea, narrow strips of land, and tightly knit village relationships. Most people traditionally live on Nukutoa, where homes have been described as closely built thatched houses clustered together with very little land between them. Ordinary life centers on fishing, coconut use, small-scale gardening where possible, canoe or boat travel, communal labor, and strong family obligations. Music, oral tradition, and ceremonial life remain especially important, and long isolation has helped preserve many songs, stories, and dances. Because land is extremely limited and conditions are fragile, many Takuu people now also live off-island while maintaining ties to the atoll and their community. Their language in ordinary life is Takuu.
The Takuu Mortlock Islander are identified primarily as Christian, though traditional ethnic religious influence remains. The New Testament is available in their language.
The Takuu Mortlock Islander need spiritual depth so that Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, biblical conviction, and obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base but limited evangelical depth, the need is for healthy churches, faithful shepherds, sound teaching, and believers who clearly understand the gospel rather than merely identifying with Christianity. Because they are a small and tightly connected island people, they need strong Christian families, enduring discipleship, and local leaders who will stand firmly on Scripture. They also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own community and to serve other ethnic groups with faithful witness, whether on the atoll or among those living away from it.
Pray that the Takuu Mortlock Islander would grow in genuine repentance, biblical clarity, and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, elders, and other local leaders would teach Scripture faithfully and lead with humility and courage.
Pray that the churches among the Takuu Mortlock Islander would be spiritually alive, doctrinally sound, and protected from nominal Christianity.
Pray for strong Christian families and enduring discipleship both on Takuu Atoll and among those living away from the island.
Pray that the Takuu Mortlock Islander would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful witness beyond their own community.
