Introduction / History

The Meoswar people live on Meoswar Island and surrounding areas in the Raja Ampat Regency of Southwest Papua, Indonesia. They are part of the Biak-Numfor cultural-linguistic group and speak a dialect related to Biak. Historically, the Meoswar have been seafaring people, relying on fishing and small-scale trade for survival. Their communities have maintained strong ties to the ocean, and their cultural identity reflects maritime traditions passed down through generations. While modern influences have reached the island, traditional customs and language remain central to their way of life.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Meoswar people revolves around fishing, gardening, and gathering forest products. Men often fish in coastal waters using traditional boats, while women tend small gardens growing cassava, taro, and vegetables. Coconut and sago are important staples. Families live in close-knit villages, and extended family relationships are highly valued. Social life includes communal work and celebrations tied to harvest seasons and religious holidays. Meals typically feature fish, sago, and tropical fruits. Hospitality is a strong cultural value, and sharing food with guests is considered an honor.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most of the Meoswars have put their faith in their traditional religion. There are some inroads from Christians, but traditional customs and beliefs still influence most aspects of life. There is a need for deeper understanding of biblical truth and spiritual growth among believers.

What Are Their Needs?

The Meoswar face both physical and spiritual challenges. Access to healthcare and education is limited due to their remote island location, and economic opportunities are scarce, leaving most families dependent on subsistence fishing and farming. Infrastructure such as clean water systems and reliable transportation is underdeveloped. Spiritually, while Christianity is present, many believers lack strong discipleship and biblical teaching. There is also a need for culturally relevant ministry that strengthens faith and equips local leaders to guide their communities.

Prayer Items

Pray for spiritual growth among Meoswar believers and for strong discipleship that leads to vibrant, Christ-centered communities.
Ask God to provide better access to education and healthcare, improving quality of life for families.
