Introduction / History

The Keyagana (also called Keigana) are an indigenous people of the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea who speak the Keyagana language, part of the Trans-New Guinea language family. Their communities have lived for generations in rugged highland terrain, maintaining strong clan ties and oral traditions rooted in village life and subsistence rhythms.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life centers on family and community. Men and women work together in subsistence gardens growing sweet potatoes, vegetables, and local staples, and raising pigs remains an important social and economic resource. Villages are organized around extended family units with elders playing respected roles. Celebrations often involve song, dance, and shared meals that reinforce unity and identity, much like other Highland groups where cultural expression remains vibrant.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Keyagana identify with Christianity, largely shaped by Protestant influence, yet many blend this with local understandings of the spiritual world, ancestral respect, and beliefs about the natural order common in Eastern Highlands cultures.

What Are Their Needs?

The Keyagana need deeper engagement with the gospel so Christ's love and truth can transform hearts and communities. They long for discipleship, access to Scripture in ways that resonate with their language and life, and opportunities to grow in a living faith that bears witness in daily life and community relationships. Local leaders need encouragement and training to cultivate sustainable, biblically grounded churches among their own people.

Prayer Items

Pray for physical provision and peace in their villages, that Christ's peace would guard their families and strengthen social bonds.
Pray that the Holy Spirit would open hearts among the Keyagana to know Jesus as Lord and Savior and that their communities would experience genuine renewal through Scripture.
Pray for strong local leadership to rise, empowered by God to teach and disciple others.
Pray that the Keyagana believers would wholeheartedly embrace the Great Commission and preach the gospel and make disciples among their own people and beyond.
Pray for the faithful translation and distribution of the complete Bible in their heart language.
