Introduction / History

The Burusu live in the North Kalimantan province of Indonesia on the island of Borneo. Regarding to their language, the Dayak Berusu language is very similar to other Murutic groups, like Tidung and Sembakung-Kalabakans Muruts. Like the life of Dayak Muruts, Tidungs and the Lundayeh, they live in the rural area in smaller scale villages in the province. Though they are considered by some researchers to be a sub-group of the Dayak, the Burusu proudly maintain that they are a distinct, indigenous people.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most of Burusu live in small, rural villages located along waterways. Many engage in slash-and-burn rice farming. Some also cultivate cash crops such as rubber and palm oil. They supplement their diet with fish, wild herbs, and by hunting local wildlife such as wild boars. Disputes, land use issues, and celebrations are managed by village elders.

Due to expansion of Javanese transmigration in the Dayak Berusu land, they often leave their villages and migrate to the nearest city with better facilities. Some of Dayak Berusu migrate to Sabah to seek better living.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many of the Burusu claim to be Christian, yet they continue to practice animism. They believe the forest, river system, and mountains are inhabited by spirits that must be appeased. The spirits are honored with elaborate rites and rituals. There is a weak Christian witness among them that needs to be bolstered by bold and loving evangelism leading to discipleship.

What Are Their Needs?

Burusu is a dying language. The younger generation mostly speak only Indonesian. The identity and heritage of this people group is in danger of being lost. They are also increasingly migrating to cities or crossing the border into Malaysia in search of employment. That suggests they need work in their homeland. They need to understand they have been made in the image of God and discover their identity in Christ.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Good News to be presented clearly to the Burusu leading to discipleship and strong fellowships.
Pray for their hearts to be open and ready to receive the gospel message.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move powerfully through the Burusu villages and communities, drawing many into relationship with Jesus.
