Introduction / History

The Tain?Daware Ambasi are an indigenous people group living primarily in the East Sepik Province, especially in the regions surrounding the Tain and Daware rivers and associated lowland areas. Their communities have traditionally been sustained through generations of close connection to the waterways and forests of their homeland.

They speak the Ambasi language, a Sepik language of the Yawimi subgroup, which helps preserve their distinct cultural identity and connects them with neighboring groups in the broader Sepik region. Their history has been kept alive largely through oral tradition, with elders passing down ancestral stories, customs, and knowledge across generations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Tain?Daware Ambasi live in small, rural villages tied closely to the natural environment. Subsistence activities such as gardening, fishing, and gathering from local forests and waterways provide food and household resources.

Social life is structured around extended family and clan connections, which shape community responsibilities and relationships. Shared work, cooperation, and respect for elders are foundational to maintaining unity and continuity within villages.

Homes are usually constructed from locally available materials, drawing on practical skills passed down through generations. Limited infrastructure and geographic isolation make travel and communication with distant towns challenging, reinforcing strong local bonds and dependence on community networks.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Tain?Daware Ambasi are primarily Christian. At the same time, some individuals continue to hold beliefs that involve trust in spiritual forces or beings apart from the one true God revealed in Scripture. These beliefs may affect how people interpret life events, illness, and aspects of the unseen world.

Where such beliefs are present, they reflect faith placed in powers other than the God of the Bible. The Bible calls all people to turn from every other source of spiritual trust and to place their faith fully in Jesus Christ alone for salvation.

Scripture availability in the Ambasi language is limited, meaning many may not yet have direct access to God's Word in their heart language.

What Are Their Needs?

Although many Tain?Daware Ambasi identify as Christian, there is a need for deeper understanding of the gospel so that faith is not merely cultural but rooted in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Access to scripture in the Ambasi language would strengthen discipleship and help individuals and churches grow in biblical understanding.

There is also a need for faithfully grounded leaders who can teach Scripture clearly and shepherd their communities with wisdom and truth.

Because of their remote and rural setting, ongoing encouragement, training, and support for believers are vital for spiritual growth and a thriving church.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Tain?Daware Ambasi would come to a clear and personal faith in Jesus Christ and trust Him alone for salvation.
Pray for the translated Scriptures and materials to become available and widely used in the Ambasi language.
Pray for strong, biblically faithful leaders who will teach God's Word with clarity and compassion.
Pray that any remaining trust in spiritual forces apart from Christ would be replaced with full confidence in him alone.
Pray that Tain?Daware Ambasi believers would grow in spiritual maturity and develop a desire to share the gospel with neighboring peoples.
