Tumu Kairi is an indigenous people group living in Sandaun Province, primarily in mountainous and foothill regions inland from the northern coast. Their communities have been sustained through generations by deep connections to their land, rivers, and village networks.
They speak the Kairi language, a Papuan language of the Sepik family, which preserves their distinct identity and connects them to neighboring peoples within the region. Their history has been maintained through oral tradition, with elders passing down customary knowledge, local lore, and community practices to younger generations.
The Tumu Kairi live in small rural villages where daily life is closely tied to the surrounding natural environment. Subsistence gardening, hunting, fishing, and gathering from forests and waterways provide food and materials for everyday needs.
Social life is structured around extended family and clan relationships. Cooperation, shared responsibilities, and respect for elders form the foundation for stability and cultural continuity within villages.
Homes are typically built from locally sourced materials, reflecting traditional building skills passed from one generation to the next. Geographic isolation and limited infrastructure make travel and communication with larger towns challenging, reinforcing close?knit community bonds.
While some modern influences have reached the region, many aspects of daily life continue according to longstanding traditions rooted in the land and cultural heritage.
The Tumu Kairi are primarily Christian. At the same time, some individuals continue to hold beliefs that involve trust in spiritual forces or beings outside of the one true God revealed in Scripture. Such beliefs may influence how life events, health, and unseen realities are interpreted.
Where these beliefs are present, they represent faith placed in powers other than God. Scripture calls all people to turn from every other source of spiritual trust and to place their faith fully in Jesus Christ alone for salvation.
Scripture in the Kairi language is available in portions, giving the community access to God's Word in a form that can be understood and applied in daily life.
Although many Tumu Kairi identify as Christian, there remains a need for deeper understanding of the gospel and lives firmly grounded in biblical truth. Personal faith in Jesus Christ and consistent discipleship are essential for genuine spiritual growth.
Continued engagement with Scripture in their own language is important so that individuals and churches can grow in maturity and discernment.
There is also a need for strong, biblically faithful leaders who can teach God's Word clearly, shepherd well, and help believers live out the gospel in daily life.
Because of their remote and rural setting, encouragement, discipleship, and support for believers are vital for a thriving church that reflects the hope of Christ.
Pray that the Tumu Kairi would come to a clear and personal faith in Jesus Christ and trust Him alone for salvation.
Pray that the Scriptures available in the Kairi language would be widely read, understood, and applied in daily life.
Pray for strong, biblically faithful leaders who will teach God's Word with clarity, compassion, and wisdom.
Pray that any remaining trust in spiritual forces apart from Christ would be replaced with full confidence in Him alone.
Pray that Tumu Kairi believers would grow in spiritual maturity and develop a desire to share the gospel with neighboring peoples.
