The Gujarati are primarily classified as the inhabitants of the state of Gujarat, western India. For most of them, Gujarati is their native language. They are a complex people group, speaking various dialects and having many cultural distinctions. Some of these differences are based on region, while others are based on their caste or community.
Most Gujaratis are in India's state of Gujarat. Today there are significant Gujarati communities in some 27 nations including France.
Gujarati in France are usually from the higher, wealthier castes and have maintained many aspects of their culture. They are often involved in trade or in operating small businesses. The Gujarati are known as being resourceful businessmen. This has helped them to successfully emigrate and thrive in France. In their spare time, the Gujarati community in France maintains and teaches their culture through the Indian Gujarati Cultural Association of France. On special occasions like the Diwali Festival they have displays of their music and Bollywood dancers.
They are usually Hindu, but a significant minority is Muslim.
No matter where they live Gujarati Diaspora members practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins. Almost all Hindus participate in yearly celebrations like Holi, the festival of colors and the start of spring / Diwali, the festival of lights / Navratri, the celebration of autumn / and Rama Navami, Rama's birthday.
Like all other peoples of the world, The Gujaratis need to surrender to Jesus Christ and allow Him to give them the abundant life He offers in John 10:10.
Pray that the Gujarati people in France will have a spiritual hunger that will open their hearts to the King of kings. Pray for workers who are driving by the love and boldness of the Holy Spirit to go to them. Pray for a disciple making movement among them to begin this decade.
