Introduction / History

The Mirasi are a caste living in the north of India. There are Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims amongst them. They are also called the Pakhwaji because of them playing the timbrel. The word Mirasi comes from the Arabic word Miras which means inheritance.


What are Their Lives Like?

The Mirasi of North India entertain at fairs in rural Punjab. Many are now laborers. Some have migrated to nearby states.

The Mirasi in Uttarh Pradesh are in regions such as Meerut. They have a Caste Council who judge in disputes and see that the people behave as they should. They are Sunni Muslims but some worship Hindu deities and Sikh gurus. They speak Urdu and Hindi.

The Mirasi of Bihar have become farmers. Some sing songs at weddings. Many are Shia Muslims. They live in Bhagalpur and other regions of the state. They speak Magadhi and in Urdu.

The Mirasi of Rajasthan live in Bikaner and other regions. A lot of them are farming tenants now. They speak a form of Rajasthani.

The Mirasi in Haryana live in Mewat among other regions. Most work as laborers. They are regarded as being of lower status and suffer exclusion. They are endogamous, which means they do not marry outside their group. They speak in Haryanvi and Urdu.

In Delhi the Mirasi are musicians. They are Muslims. Many have small businesses such as vegetable selling.

In the Indian Punjab, the Mirasi are Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. They speak in Punjabi and Urdu and are genealogists.

There are many sub groups among the Mirasi.

In the Pakistan Punjab, the Mirasi speak in Punjabi and Urdu. They are entertainers. Many are Muslims. They are in most places in the Punjab. Many are farm workers. Some are sales people. The well-educated are in government and military work also.
