Introduction / History

The Gangai of Nepal live mostly in the Jhapa and Morang regions. They have flat noses, rough curly hair, ordinary faces and wheatish complexions. The Morang Gangai speak Mathili while the Gangai of Jhapa speak Rajbanshi. They say they have their own language too and are trying very hard to keep it going. They have a different style of clothing to others.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They are living in joint families (many generations living under the same roof). They celebrate their festivals, for example the Amati festival.

There are two sections of the Gangai which are Babu and Besaram. The Babu eat pork but the Besaram do not. The Gangai work as farmers. They are divided into another seven sub groups. Four of them live in Nepal and these are the Pal, Sharma, Kumhar and Mandal.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Gangai are Hindus by religion. They worship the gods Mahabir and Thakur. These are their ancestor gods.

Prayer Points

* Pray that main members of the Gangai families become Christians and then lead the other family members to Jesus Christ.
