Introduction / History

The Panawa people live in central Nigeria, in the Toro Local Government area of Bauchi State. They originally lived in five villages on one large hill named Owa Panawa, just in front of their present settlement. In 1948, all five villages moved to the plain. The combined population of all five villages ranges from 3-4 thousand. The language is Panawa. Some English is spoken, but Hausa is widespread. The closest town (approximately 5 kms) is Tilden Fulani.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Little is known about the day to day lives of the Panawa people. Bauchi State is nicknamed "The Pearl of Tourism," but that is being threatened by the spread of Boko Haram in to the region. Bauchi has absorbed a large number of displaced people seeking refuge from regional violence. On December 22, 2014 a bomb blast in a market in Bauchi City killed six people.

The Panawa are exogamous clans. Clans from 2 and 3 must marry from clans 1, 4 and 5.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Panawa are exogamous clans. Clans from 2 and 3 must marry from clans 1, 4 and 5.

What Are Their Needs?

Their foremost need is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They need wisdom in their government to take a strong stance to protect the people from groups like Boko Haram.

Prayer Points

That the Gospel will reach them and be the seed that falls on fertile ground.
