The Hang Tong Tai people group is one of several subgroups of Thai in Vietnam, each speaking its own language. The Thai groups of Vietnam are only distantly related to the Thai groups of Thailand, and speak different, but somewhat related, languages. Each Thai group has its own customs and histories. They are from the mountainous northern regions of Vietnam. The Hang Tong Tai are not majority Buddhist as are many Thai groups, but instead are animists. They believe that non-human objects have spirits, and believe that people have multiple souls. The spirits must be appeased in order to be blessed and not be cursed.
No scripture or other Christian resources have been reported in the language of the Tai Hang Tong. There aren't many speakers, and resources may not be available for a long time.
Some have said that Animism is a "pre-Christian" religion, that animistic beliefs can serve as forerunners to Christian beliefs. But Christian workers are needed to help the Thai make this major change in their thinking.
Pray for the Followers of Christ
There are indications there may be a few Christians among the Tai Hang Tong. Please pray the Lord will help them come to a clear understanding of how to know Him and walk with Him, not mixing animistic beliefs with the purity of the Gospel.
Pray for the Entire People Group
Please pray this small Thai group will be set free from living in fear of created beings and imaginary beings, and come to live in confidence with the God who loves them.
