Introduction / History

The Antesaka originally came from the islands in Indonesia. They came to the island of Madagascar in canoes and were known as "people/those canoes" or "Sea People." The group divided into the forest while others remained on the west coast of the island.

In the 17th century immigrants came from the Middle East, South Asia/Pacific, and Europe. These immigrants mixed with the original group from Indonesia by marriage. The result was the formation of several people groups. The Antaisaka, or Antesaka, originated during this time period. The dialect of Antesaka is from the Malayo-Polynesian language.

Where Are they Located?

The Antesaka are located along the remote east coast of Madagascar.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The women are in charge of harvesting the rice. The taro, banana, coconut, and sugar are also part of their agriculture. Most houses are based on a square piloti. The Antesaka enjoy music on the conch, drum, and xylophone. A popular dance is the "bird dance."

What Are Their Beliefs?

The daily lives of the Antesaka are driven by folk beliefs and taboo. For example, the men will not participate in harvesting rice with women. The Antesaka also practice ancestor worship. Burial rituals are emphasized. In the early days of island population the dead were buried at the bottom of the sea in a canoe. Today most houses have a second door on the east side of the house used only to take out the dead corpse. There are a few Antesaka churches, but most Antesaka still need to hear the Gospel message.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Antesaka churches would grow in their knowledge of the Gospel.
Pray that the few Antesaka Christians would have the desire, and be equipped, to share with those who have not heard.
Pray that the Antesaka Christians would live in such a way that others would be drawn to the Truth.
Pray that the needs of the Antesaka people would be met.
