Introduction / History
The Kaera people are a distinct, small-scale community located in the remote islands of Eastern Indonesia, specifically within the Alor. Their language is also called Kaera.
What Are Their Lives Like?
Coastal fishing and subsistence agriculture define most of their economy. Most are multilingual, using Kaera for regional trade and communication, and Bahasa Indonesia for schooling and business. They are hoping the next generation will retain their language so it is not lost to the national language.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Kaeras have a mixed faith which blends animistic practices with Christianity. Their faith in Jesus Christ is compromised by faith in the spirit world.
What Are Their Needs?
They struggle with poverty and having access to the formal economy. This is exacerbated by infrastructure deficits that leave them with unreliable electricity and low-quality education. Their remote location attracts few qualified and skilled teachers.
