The Mor Islands people live in the Mor archipelago, located off the coast of Papua Province, Indonesia. They speak the Mor language, which belongs to the Austronesian language family. Historically, the Mor Islands were inhabited by small, clan-based communities that relied on fishing and trade with neighboring islands. Their culture reflects a strong maritime heritage, and traditional customs have been preserved despite outside influences. Contact with missionaries in the past introduced Christianity, but cultural traditions remain deeply rooted in daily life.
The Mor Islands people live in coastal villages where fishing is the primary source of livelihood. Men fish in the surrounding seas using traditional boats, while women tend small gardens growing cassava, taro, and vegetables. Coconut and sago are important staples. Families live in close-knit communities, and extended family relationships are highly valued. Social life includes communal work and celebrations tied to harvest seasons and religious holidays. Meals typically feature fish, sago, and tropical fruits. Hospitality is a strong cultural value, and sharing food with guests is considered an honor.
The Mor Islands people identify primarily with their ethnic religious practices and traditional customs. There is a Christian presence, but faith in Christ usually gives way to animistic beliefs. There is a need for deeper understanding of biblical truth and spiritual growth among believers, as syncretism remains a challenge.
The Mor Islands people face both physical and spiritual challenges. Access to healthcare and education is limited due to their remote island location, and economic opportunities are scarce, leaving most families dependent on subsistence fishing and farming. Infrastructure such as clean water systems and reliable transportation is underdeveloped. Spiritually, while Christianity is present, many believers lack strong discipleship and biblical teaching. There is a need for culturally relevant ministry that strengthens faith and equips local leaders to guide their communities in following Christ.
Pray that the gospel will penetrate every Mor Islands family and community, bringing transformation and hope through Jesus Christ.
Ask God to raise up workers who will serve among the Mor Islands people with humility and perseverance, sharing the word of God in ways that connect with their culture.
Intercede for Mor Islands believers to grow in faith and become part of the global discipleship force, reaching others with the good news.
Pray for improved access to education, healthcare, and clean water so that physical needs are met and communities can flourish.
