Introduction / History

There are many tribes in China's southwestern Yunnan Province, most of which have little written history. The Northwestern Nisu people are among them.

Where Are they Located?

The Northwestern Nisu people live in China's under developed Yunnan Province.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Northwestern Nisu people are farmers who grow rice and raise livestock.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Members of the Northwestern Nisu people make offerings of fake money or livestock. They bring their offerings to a priest who performs a ritual that they believe will send their dead relative's spirit off to Ngomi, the after world. They believe that after the deceased crosses the rivers and mountains they will need enough money to purchase more land in the spirit world to make room for the rest of the family after they die. They believe these offerings to the King of Ngomi will help their "living family" to prosper and not face the terrible wrath of the gods.

What Are Their Needs?

They maintain their history through oral means. Gospel materials will need to be presented to them the same way.
