Introduction / History

The Sumtu Chin (AKA, Cumtu Chin) are a Chin ethnic group residing primarily in the mountainous regions of western Myanmar. Their identity is deeply rooted in the Sumtu Chin language, which serves as a vital link across generations. The Sumtu Chin have a history shaped by their remote environment, traditional governance, and interactions with neighboring Chin groups. Over time, they have preserved their customs and social structures, even as they have encountered outside influences and changes in the broader society. At one time they tattooed girlss faces, but that practice stopped in the 1970s.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Sumtu Chin communities are typically found in hilly, forested areas where agriculture is the mainstay of daily life. Families work together to cultivate rice, maize, and vegetables on terraced fields, while livestock such as pigs and chickens are also raised. Meals often feature rice, leafy greens, and locally sourced meats. Women weave goods and sell them to supplement the family income. Family bonds are strong, with extended relatives living nearby and elders playing a guiding role in community decisions.

Festivals and celebrations are marked by traditional music, dance, and communal feasting, especially during harvest time and important life events. Hospitality and cooperation are highly valued, fostering a sense of unity and mutual support.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The spiritual life of the Sumtu Chin reflects a blend of Christian faith and traditional beliefs. Many have embraced Christianity, participating actively in church life and Christian celebrations. At the same time, some Sumtu Chin continue to place their trust in ancestral spirits and local spiritual forces, seeking protection, healing, and guidance through rituals and ceremonies. These expressions of faith are woven into the fabric of daily life and special occasions, revealing a worldview that acknowledges both the visible and invisible realms.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to quality education and healthcare remains a significant challenge for the Sumtu Chin, particularly in remote villages. Improved infrastructure and clean water would greatly enhance their well-being. While Christian churches are present, there are still communities where the good news of Jesus Christ has not been fully shared. The Sumtu Chin, like all people, long for hope, peace, and transformation that only Christ can bring.
