Introduction / History

The Laomian people, a small ethnic group in southwestern China, primarily reside in Yunnan Province, near the borders with Laos and Myanmar. Their origins are linked to the broader Hani ethnic group, but the Laomian have maintained a distinct identity through their language and cultural practices. Over generations, they have navigated the challenges of isolation and interaction with neighboring groups, adapting to changing political and social landscapes while preserving their traditions. Despite modernization in China, the Laomian continue to hold on to their unique way of life.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Laomian people rely on subsistence farming, growing crops such as rice, maize and tea. Their agricultural methods include terraced farming, a practice well-suited to the mountainous terrain where they live. Family and community cooperation play a central role in their daily lives, with everyone contributing to the success of farming and household management. In addition to agriculture, the Laomian engage in small-scale trading and handicraft production to supplement their income. They live in tight-knit villages, where traditional wooden houses with thatched roofs dot the landscape.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Laomian practice a mix of animism and Buddhism, with a deep-rooted belief in spirits that inhabit nature. They perform rituals to appease these spirits, particularly before planting and harvesting seasons, as well as during significant life events. Ancestor worship is also an important aspect of their spiritual life. While some Laomian have adopted Buddhist practices, their traditional animist beliefs continue to play a key role in their daily activities, guiding their interactions with nature and their community.

What Are Their Needs?

The Laomian community faces several challenges, including limited access to healthcare, education and infrastructure. Their remote location in the mountains restricts their access to government services and economic opportunities. Many Laomian children have little access to quality education, and healthcare services are sparse. Economic development programs, improved educational opportunities, and better infrastructure would greatly improve their quality of life. Additionally, any development efforts should respect their traditional way of life and provide sustainable options for preserving their agricultural practices and environment.

Prayer Points

Pray that God sends many loving workers to the Laomian people of China.
Pray that God would work in the hearts of the Laomian to give them a hunger to hear God's word, a solid understanding of Jesus Christ, and the determination to believe the message regardless of the cost.
Pray for the handful of believers, that God would meet their needs and keep them strong in the face of any form of persecution.
