Introduction / History

Gambia's Deaf history is still new and in development. Sign Language was not officially recognized as a language until the 1990's when a missionary from Holland came and founded a school for the Deaf. There are born into Catholic family Christians but very few and many change to Muslim to be able to marry.

Where Are they Located?

The Deaf are scattered around The Gambia but many near Serrekunda or Banjul.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many of them lack basic education or communication with their families. Some have been fortunate enough to be able to attend school and learn Gambian sign language. Work is difficult to find.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority of the Deaf label themselves Muslim (Sunni) and practice prayer and holiday celebrations. Out of all the Christians, there are about a little over 20 that we have accounted for.

Prayer Points

Church planting is underway among the Deaf in The Gambia. Pray the church will flourish.
