Introduction / History

The Jewish people began arriving in Japan in the nineteenth century. More Jews began coming to Japan after 1920. During World War II, the German Nazis tried to get the Japanese to come against the Japanese Jews but the Japanese government refused even though they were allies of Germany. Many Polish Jews escaped to Japan via Lithuania in the early part of the war.

After the war, many Jews in Japan went to live in Israel after it became a country in 1948. Some went to western countries like America. Regarding the Jews that stayed in Japan, some married the Japanese.

There are many Japanese families in the capital Tokyo. Some are in Kobe which is the sixth largest city in Japan. The Jewish people first went to Kobe to live after the 1923 earthquake in the Japanese island of Honshu.

Some Jews come to Japan for business reasons and some stay only for a short time. There are Jews among the American military in Japan. There are Jewish community centers in the cities where they mostly live. They speak mainly in Japanese.

Many books on the Jewish faith are in Japan. Not too many of the Jews attend synagogues here. Many Japanese Jews work in finance and there are journalists and students too. There is a Kibbutz monthly periodical in Japanese. Most Jews living in Japan now are from America. A lot of Japanese know very little about Jewish people who are living in Japan.

Prayer Points

* Pray that Jewish people in Japan find a liking to the Bible rather than in Japanese secularism.
* Pray that Messianic Jews will lead the Japanese Jews to Jesus Christ.
