Introduction / History

The Churautes have been long known as the Hill Muslims of Nepal. They get their name from the term chura which means 'glass bangle '. The Churautes are of the lower artisan caste of the central Nepal hills. They speak Nepali.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today the small Churaute community can still be found in the hills of Gorkha, Tanahu and Syangja districts as sellers of glass bangles, hair ornaments and small items. They are referred to as 'miyan' and are considered to have very low status.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Churautes are Sunni Muslims. Like most Muslims living in a Hindu land, their version of Islam includes aspects of Hinduism.

What Are Their Needs?

It is difficult for Muslims in Nepal to hear the gospel. Nepal is geographically isolated by the Himalayan Mountains. Religiously, it is a Hindu dominated nation. Muslims tend to isolate themselves socially.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Nepali church living in and among this depressed hill Muslim group would share the truth of Christ with them.
Pray for the Churaute people to have the spiritual hunger it takes to embrace Christ no matter what the cost.
Praise God for the six believers among them. Pray they will be salt and light to their families and neighbors.
