Romkun is the language of seven villages along the Ramu river on the western border of Madang Province. A 2003 report by SIL International states found 630 speakers of Romkun, while a 2001 report by Ausaid says that there are twice that many. Although there is no consensus on the number of speakers, it is certain that there is no Bible in this language. This is despite the fact that 90 percent of the population claims to be Christian.
They grow fruit, green vegetables, bananas, taro and sweet potatoes when they can. However, their land is often prone to flooding, which destroys gardens and homes. Pray that they know God as their strength and provider. They are also a long way from health and other services. As a result, literacy is very low in this area, perhaps less than 10 percent.
A very high percentage of the Romkun people profess Christ. They would understand their faith far better if they had a complete Bible and audio materials.
God grieves that his people cannot connect well with him because they don't have his word in a language that they understand well! Please pray to remove this barrier.
Pray for audio scriptures and pray for better educational opportunities.
Ask the Lord of the harvest to thrust out workers into his harvest field of Romkun and bring the Bible in a language that they understand.
Pray for the health and wellbeing of the Romkun people. Sago is a staple of the Ramu River peoples.
