Introduction / History

The Mba are an indigenous Sudanic people group of northern Democratic Republic of Congo, also known as Mbae or Manga. They have lived for generations in rural riverine and forest-edge regions, maintaining strong kinship networks and agricultural traditions while interacting with neighboring peoples through trade and intermarriage. Their language is called Mba.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Mba families depend on subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale trade. Households are extended, with elders guiding family and community decisions. Celebrations center on harvests, weddings, and church events, marked by drumming, dancing, and shared meals. Common foods include cassava, maize, leafy greens, fish, and palm oil, reflecting broader Congolese rural cuisine.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Although there are few Mba evangelicals, the majority identify as Christians, mainly within Protestant and neo-Pentecostal traditions, yet elements of traditional beliefs about spirits and ancestors often remain blended into daily life.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mba face limited access to quality education, healthcare, and clean water, which hinders community development. Economic instability and poor infrastructure restrict market access and opportunities. Continued discipleship and biblical training are needed so believers mature in faith and participate in spreading Christ's glory throughout Africa. The Mba community needs the Scriptures, discipleship materials, and evangelism resources in their heart language.

Prayer Points

Pray for spiritual renewal, strong local churches, and trained leaders. Pray asking God to provide clean water, healthcare, education, and sustainable livelihoods. Pray for peace, stability, and for the Mba believers to become a blessing to surrounding peoples. Pray for a faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Mba language. Pray that the Mba Christians would lead their communities for God's glory, preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own nation and beyond.
