Dorio in Solomon Islands

Introduction / History

The Dorio are an indigenous Austronesian-speaking people living in west-central Malaita in the Solomon Islands. Their Dori'o language belongs to the Oceanic branch and is used in daily life. Historically, they share in the broader Malaita cultural patterns shaped by clan identity, subsistence living, and later contact with Christian missions during the colonial era.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is village-based, centered on gardening, fishing, and small-scale trade. Extended families form the core social unit, with strong kinship ties and respect for elders. Celebrations often include communal feasts, music, and storytelling. Staple foods include root crops, fish, and coconut products typical of Pacific Island diets.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Dorio identify as Christian, largely Protestant, though some traditional beliefs remain alongside church practice. Biblical resources in their language are limited, and access to Scripture and media is still developing.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater access to Scripture in the Dori'o language would strengthen spiritual growth and discipleship. Leadership training would help local believers mature and reach neighboring groups. Economic and educational development could improve community stability and open doors for ministry.
