Introduction / History

The Ladino people, also known as Sephardic Jews, trace their heritage to Jews who lived in Spain and Portugal before the expulsion in the late 15th century. After leaving Iberia, they settled in regions such as the Ottoman Empire, North Africa, and the Middle East. Ladino refers to their historic language, a Judeo-Spanish dialect that preserves elements of medieval Spanish. Many Ladino-speaking families eventually migrated to Israel during the 20th century, bringing with them a cultural and linguistic heritage that continues to influence Israeli society today. Smaller numbers are in Greece and Turkey.
