The Khmer Khae live in Laos as a small Khmer speaking people group who maintain strong ethnic traditions while participating in the wider Lao cultural and religious landscape. They trace their roots to the broader Khmer cultural and linguistic world that centers in Cambodia but extends across the Mekong basin; over generations they settled pockets in Laos and adapted Khmer customs to local conditions while preserving Khmer language and identity.
Khmer Khae families farm rice and garden plots, raise livestock for household use, and sell small surpluses at nearby markets. Villages center on extended family networks and local temples or spirit houses that anchor social life. Children attend local schools when available, but many communities face limited access to consistent education, health care, and market infrastructure. Daily life follows seasonal rhythms of planting and harvest, and people pass knowledge and history by oral tradition and communal festivals.
The Khmer Khae follow ethnic religions, which blend ancient animistic practices with spiritual elements from Theravada Buddhism that dominate broader Khmer cultural identity. In their worldview, spirit forces associated with land, ancestors, and natural features influence daily life and must be respected through ritual observances and offerings. They hold strong beliefs in unseen spiritual powers and often consult elders or ritual specialists when facing sickness, crop failures, or social tensions. While Buddhist holidays and local temple activities increasingly shape community religious calendars, the intertwining of folk beliefs with Buddhist practices remains central to how they understand life, misfortune, and prosperity. Outside surveys record almost no evangelical Christian presence among the Khmer Khae, and the group remains largely unreached by sustained church planting.
They need clear and culturally sensitive gospel presentation that speaks into their spiritual framework of ancestral and nature spirits with the life and love of Jesus Christ. They need Scripture in accessible formats and opportunities for discipleship that help them understand the gospel in ways that transform their worldview rather than simply overlay new terminology. They need long-term relationships and ministry presence that partner with local leaders and families, building trust while demonstrating the love of Christ through tangible care in areas like health, education, and community development.
Pray that the Holy Spirit would break through spiritual barriers and open the hearts of the Khmer Khae to recognize their need for Jesus.
Pray for workers to live among them and share the gospel faithfully and respectfully.
Pray for gospel materials in Khmer to become widely accessible to the Khmer Khae.
Pray for discipleship that leads to multiplying communities of believers and not dependence on outsiders.
Pray for holistic expressions of God's love through compassion ministries that build trust and demonstrate God's concern for physical, emotional, and spiritual flourishing.
