The Muslim Tessi people of Sudan live primarily in the Nuba Mountains, a region known for its ethnic diversity, complex history and fighting. They speak Sudanese Arabic, unlike many of their neighbors. Historically, the Tessi have been farmers and herders, adapting to the region’s challenging terrain and climate. Over time, they adopted Islam, which now forms a core part of their identity and social structure. Despite political instability and environmental pressures, the Tessi people continue to preserve their traditions and customs, blending them with their Islamic faith.
There is a high poverty level among the Tessi people, who rely very heavily on subsistence farming and livestock herding to sustain their livelihoods. They cultivate crops such as millet, sorghum and maize which are suited to the semi-arid conditions of the Nuba Mountains. Livestock, including goats and cattle, provide an additional source of food and income, and are often viewed as symbols of wealth and social status. Farming practices are largely dictated by the seasonal rains, which determine the timing of planting and harvesting.
Tessi villages are close-knit communities, with extended families living near one another and cooperating in daily tasks. Their homes are typically constructed from mud and thatch, designed to protect against the harsh climate. Life revolves around family, religious practices, and agricultural work. Although some Tessi people have migrated to urban centers in search of better opportunities, the majority remain in rural areas, maintaining their traditional lifestyle.
The Tessi people are Sunni Muslims, and Islam plays a central role in their daily lives. They observe the five pillars of Islam, including daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, and participation in religious festivals such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Mosques serve as the focal points of both religious and social gatherings, where local imams offer spiritual guidance.
Although Islam is the dominant religion, some traditional beliefs related to nature and agriculture persist. These beliefs are often intertwined with Islamic practices, particularly in rituals that seek blessings for successful harvests or the health of livestock. The blending of these practices reflects the community’s strong connection to the land and their efforts to ensure their survival in a challenging environment.
The Tessi people face several challenges, especially regarding economic development, healthcare and education. Their dependence on traditional farming methods makes them vulnerable to environmental challenges such as droughts and unpredictable rainfall, which can threaten their food security. Access to modern farming tools, irrigation systems and sustainable agricultural practices would greatly benefit their livelihoods.
Healthcare services are limited in Tessi villages, with many relying on traditional remedies due to the lack of medical facilities. Preventable diseases and malnutrition are common, as access to proper healthcare is often difficult. Education is another critical need, as many Tessi children lack access to quality schools, limiting their future opportunities for social and economic advancement.
Development programs that focus on improving healthcare, education and agricultural sustainability would significantly benefit the Tessi people. These initiatives should respect their Islamic faith and cultural traditions, ensuring that any progress aligns with their values and way of life.
Pray for his kingdom to come and his will to be done among the Tessi people.
Pray for a movement of Tessi households to study the Bible and accept the blessings of Christ.
Pray for a spiritual hunger that will drive the Tessi people to the arms of Jesus.
Pray for workers who are filled with the fruit and the power of the Holy Spirit to go to the Tessi people.
