The Vellala are a large caste who work mainly in agriculture and live in Tamil Nadu and speak, read and write in Tamil. They speak Hindi too.
The Vellala are monogamous and prefer cross-cousin marriages. Widows can now marry again. It is not approved of by the general community. Divorce is allowed but does not happen much. On the death of the father, the sons inherit most of the property.
The Vellala are Hindus by religion but there are some Vellala Christians. They have festivals and have birth, marriage and death rituals.
In Kerala, the Vellala are vegetarians who eat rice. They believe in education and in family planning.
Pray that Indian Christians lead the Vellala to Jesus Christ.
Pray that gospel materials will lead them to salvation.
