Introduction / History

The Kumhar are a caste in India. They are not vegetarians. They are mostly Hindus but there are Muslims among them. The word Kumhar means potter. Most of them are potters. Some of their items get sold abroad. Hindi is spoken by them.

In Maharashtra, the Kumhar speak Marathi and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. They class themselves as lower status.

In Madhya Pradesh, Gola is a common surname among the Kumhar. They are classed as a scheduled caste.

In Rajasthan, the Kumhar are in the middle of the higher castes. They believe in endogamy and have clan exogamy (they prefer marriage with someone outside their clan, but within the caste.)

In Bengal they are a pure caste in ceremony. In Orissa the Jagannathia give vessels for rice in their temple.

The Kumhar are in other states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh.

Prayer Points

* Pray that God will give the Kumhar dreams and visions leading them to Jesus Christ.
