Introduction / History

The Sut of India live in Assam and work mainly in agriculture. They were previously called Boria related to the word widow. They live in the Brahmaputra Valley. Rice is eaten by them as a cereal and meat, fish and eggs are eaten by them. They speak, read and write in Assamese.

The bereaved and divorced can marry again. They can marry the Koch. On the death of the father, property goes in same amounts to the sons. They have rituals for births and marriages. The dead are cremated.

A local council rules and looks after the Sut. Hinduism is their religion. Bihu is their main festival. More drinking water is needed for them.
