Introduction / History
Black (Afro) Cubans make up a significant part of the population of the island nation. Their heritage can be traced to slaves from West and Central Africa – including groups such as the Yoruba, Congo, and Ewe. Their culture is a colorful blend of African traditions/religions practices and Spanish Catholicism.
What Are Their Lives Like?
Black Cubans speak a form of Spanish influenced by African languages, in several unique dialects. Many suffer from poverty and most of the prison population in Cuba is made up of Black Cubans.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Black Cubans, like many Cubans, practice a mixture of Roman Catholicism and African ethnic religions, including Santeria ("Veneration of the Saints"). They believe each person is assigned a guiding spirit at birth.
What Are Their Needs?
Many of the Black Cubans live in poverty-stricken areas of urban centers. They have been largely marginalized, and some have embraced a victim mentality.
Prayer Points
Pray for them to seek their identity and dignity in Christ, even those who have been incarcerated.
Pray for this people group to be healed from historical abuse and know the joy found only in Jesus.
Pray that soon God will use them as his ambassadors to those without a gospel witness.
Pray that many will take the Perspectives class and become deeply involved in the great commission.
