Introduction / History

In Turkey there is no Sign Language in Deaf schools. Most of the Deaf are born to parents who can hear. There are variations in the use of Turkish Sign Language in different parts of the country but in spite of this it is possible for these Deaf people to understand each other.

Turkish Sign Language is a visual one. There has been little or no use of Sign Language in Deaf schools in Turkey since the early nineteen fifties. Sign Language has been replaced by oral education. There are attempts now to get Sign Language into schools here. There are many Deaf schools in Turkey.

The Turkish Federation for the Deaf was formed in the 1960s and since then there have been many Deaf clubs.

Turkey is officially a secular state but Islam is the religion here.
