Introduction / History

Bhutan began the first help for the Deaf in a hearing school in the capital Thimphu at the beginning of this century. Recently the first school for the Deaf was approved in Paro. They are looking to develop Bhutanese Sign Language as the main sign language. Vocabulary for technical subjects and what regional signs to use where there are differences are looked to be brought into being too.

Deaf education is not advanced and the Deaf tend to be in hearing schools. There is a shortage of Deaf teachers and more sign language interpreters are needed. There is a lack of knowledge of deaf ness on the part of teachers.

Deaf students can find it difficult to mix with those who can hear. More schools are said to be needed for the Deaf here.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Bhutanese Deaf will come into contact with Deaf Christians and be led to Jesus Christ.
Pray that the Deaf in Bhutan will get the help that they need in life.
