Introduction / History

The Lohar live in several states with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar having the largest numbers of them. They speak the languages of the states they live in and Hindi too. Hinduism is their religion though there are Muslims and Sikhs among them also. Some worship ancestors.

The Lohar work in ironwork and as blacksmiths. They repair agricultural tools. They are having to compete with factories and this is difficult for them. They have a council to look after them in most states. Modern and traditional medicines and family planning are used by them.

Marriages are arranged for them. The divorced and bereaved can marry again. On the death of the father, sons inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home.

The Lohar have difficulties with self-esteem. Their education level is low so the gospel will need to be given in oral form too. They are in need of help with health matters.

Prayer Points

* Pray that gospel recordings will lead them to salvation.
* Pray that the council leaders come to Jesus Christ and lead others to Him.
* Pray that they find that Jesus Christ loves them regardless of their status.
* Pray that their work, education and health needs are met with success.
