Described in the 1871 census as religious beggars, priests of inferior temples, and sellers of flowers used for offerings, the Satani are reported to have been excommunicated by the higher castes owing to their supposedly inferior status.
Some still pursue their traditional vocation of serving as temple priests or as servants attached to temples as well as that of sacred specialists. Others have moved on.
These Hindus belong to the Vaishnava sect of Hinduism and follow the teachings of Ramanuja. Sacred specialists from their own community perform all their religious rites. The Satani worship Vishnu, Lakshmi and regional deities.
A Hindu coming to accept and follow Christ is likely to experience much disfavor and even hostility. Loss of friendships and status in the community is likely, and very difficult to deal with.
The Satani people need job training so they can be productive members of society.
There are no known followers of Jesus Christ yet among the Satani people group, although there may be believers who have not made themselves known to outsiders. Please pray for any secret believers, and for many others to come to saving faith.
Pray for Satani youth to discover good Christian resources on the internet, on the radio, and on television. Pray they will be drawn to these resources, will listen, view, and read, and will have understanding and faith.
Please pray this people group to have spiritual hunger and discernment so they can seek and find the truth.
