Introduction / History

The Samantan live in Kerala and speak, read and write in Malayalam. Among them there are vegetarians and non vegetarians. They eat rice as a cereal. Hinduism is their religion.

The Samantan have cousin marriages by discussion. There are birth and marriage rituals. The divorced can marry again with approval. The bereaved can marry again. The dead are usually cremated except for very young children who are buried.

The Samantan work in cultivation, business and some for the government. They have a council to look after them. They are educated to college level. Modern and traditional medicines are used by them. They use family planning too.
