Introduction / History

Traditionally the Kallasari people were masons. They have the status of Other Backward Castes, which means they have low status, but they are definitely not at the bottom.

The Kallasari people live in a small area in Kerala, southern India.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Though some Kallasari people are still masons, they have other opportunities in today's India. Their weddings take place at the home of the bride. Floral garlands are prominent in their weddings. Unlike most Hindu communities, the Kallasari people bury their dead rather than cremate them.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kallasari people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. They worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. Hindus believe that by performing rituals and good works that they will attain moksha or freedom from the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are many forms of Hinduism, each with its own deities and beliefs.

The main yearly holidays of the Kallasari people are Holi, the festival of colors and the start of spring / Diwali, the festival of lights / Navratri, the celebration of autumn / and Rama Navami, Rama's birthday.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kallasari people need to have the chance to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. There are many strong believers in Kerala who can lead them to the Lord.
