Introduction / History

Yazgul is more of a language than an ethnic group. It has two dialects, one for those who live in the mountains, and another for those who live at lower elevations. Most people who speak this language also speak Tajik, the national language of Tajikistan.

Where Are they Located?

Yazgul speakers like in Tajikistan's Khation Province, and Gorno-Badakshan Province.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Though the two Yazgul speaking groups (higher and lower elevations) are both agricultural, they grow different crops. Those in the lower elevations are more likely to have orchards, while those in the mountains must depend more heavily on livestock. Both groups also send hand crafts.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The primary religion practiced by Yazgul speakers is Shi 'ite Islam, one of two major denominations of Islam. They live among mainly Sunni Muslims. There is often hostility between the two sectors of Islam.

What Are Their Needs?

Many of these people (especially those who live in the mountains) are isolated from any gospel witness.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Yazgul speakers will be able to access gospel recordings and Bible portions.
Pray for the Lord to send out someone to take Christ to the Yazgul speakers.
Pray for a strong disciple making movement to emerge among these Muslims.
